Gathering of the City welcomes Canoe and the walkers to the city centre to collide with Geelong After Dark. Choirs and dancers from all parts of the municipality converge as Canoe and it’s entourage of walkers enter Johnstone Park at the end of day one. Walkers are invited to walk a ‘lap of honour’ around the ceremony circle as part of this gathering. Be ready to sing your heart out as the massed choir and dancers create an infectious celebratory atmosphere, a nourishing for tired feet.

One big non-stop jam session by a diverse mix of local musicians, both young and old and from the well-known to the lesser known, but all sharing common ground with their passion and flare for music. This unique collection of musicians will deliver an earthy, organic and edgy session of blues/roots/folk/rock/country inspired music for GAD audiences.

Gnomeless is an installation of gnomes in their true form, earth elementals, standing on piles of earth and treasure in the shadows. Dimly lit, of earth and stone, the gnomes are dispossessed and despised guardians of the underground. A limited edition of the Small Issue will be published in celebration of Geelong After Dark and offered to those able see the true nature of the gnome.

Keen to hear the voices of women from Geelong’s past, I stumbled on the story of two quirky and fascinating very early settlers: Anne Drysdale (1792-1853) and Caroline Newcomb (1812-1892). Despite an age gap of 20 years the women were partners, living together on the Bellarine and running a successful property between the Barwon River and Point Henry.

Sound artists and performers Ros Bandt and Vicki Hallett are joined by Jem Savage to premiere their new work Earthscape. It looks from earth outward to science and the cosmos in Dish, and inward in Probe exploring how human actions have consequences. Scope suggests a better balance in the future, watching the environment through sound, video, sculpture and live performance.

The Apprentices of the Royal Explorers Society explore places you can only dream of. They dive beneath the waves, mine the earth’s riches and soar the skies. They delve into the imagination to uncover mythologies in the places they visit, unlocking for their audiences new ways of experiencing familiar surroundings.

The Rotunda at Johnstone Park, will transform into a giant glowing lantern from which images will dance and play to create a world of colour, shadow and light to tell the story of the Celtic Sea God Mannanon! Lantunda is a community arts project in partnership with National Celtic Festival, a Made in Natimuk artist Mary French and the Portarlington community.

Caisson is a disruptive projected artwork that redefines a laneway space in central Geelong. From key vantage points the work creates a trompe l'oeil that changes the way people view and interact with the banal spot chosen for this work. Artist Joel Zika invites participants to explore this fantastic mural projection as they manoeuvre through the streets of Geelong, people will be entranced as abstracted forms break through the grey brick facade.

Look out for The Harpy an elaborate interactive roaming art piece wandering through the streets throughout the evening. The Harpy inspired by the red-tailed black cockatoo, an Australian bird found as far south as South-Eastern Victoria and endangered in the region.

Where I go to at Night is a sentimental artwork about a night creature building a glow nest alone in the dark. It will be a mixture of a glowing underwater world, glow worms and fireflies, organic meets post apocalyptic.

Let us warm you up as you commence your after dark adventures. Voices calling across the sumptuous GPAC foyer will flow from our hearts to yours. In our burst of song we will wrap you in an ancient call of the rainforest, tickle you with whimsical Celtic melodies and embrace you in a soaring original piece premiered at Geelong After Dark.

The superimposed, shifting digital ornament and abstract treatments of light reveal the array of spatial conditions within the architectural permanence of the historical town hall structure.
With the shape-shifting ability of projection mapping, the work explores the concept of architectural ornament to transcend the civic spectacle and shift our focus to current issues.

The idea of the cute fluffy bunny has been flipped on its head with the latest Public Art Acquisition installed along La Trobe Terrace. The artwork recasts the rabbit as a sinister invasive species, which has been responsible for much environmental damage across the nation.

Experience Local Faces, a live community digital portrait activity provided by the Little Projector Company, a creative finger puppet station, Positively Positive Party DJ’s, and a pop-up bar and café.

Based on a literary commission by Bobuq Sayed, hear Mx.Red speak of the future where the world has accepted that gender is on a spectrum. How would a person from our current time negotiate this world? Dive into this sonic installation by downloading the Mx.Red app, available on the Apple and Android stores. The geometry across the venue is the portal to hear their voice.

Back to Back Theatre is turning their studio into a gallery, presenting a large single channel video made with members of the Geelong community.

Witness the eruption of Geelong’s very own dormant Volcano ‘The Dome’, which occupies the site of the Geelong Library. This is the first eruption for generations and it’s just in time for Geelong After Dark 2018!

Visit Eardrummi, Joshua Maxwell De Hoog’s book launch and exhibition in the CHYA Gallery. While on the outside deck join us for some unplugged tunes.

There will be multiple short performances throughout the night, between 6pm and 9.30pm in our Theatre.

Bee brave and bug your family to come to the Geelong Library for an illuminating experience with Earths Little Bugs. Create your own glow-in-the-dark mini-beast as part of the Amazing Arts Adventure and experience a world of bugs, beetles and bees.

Immersify Art Gallery is a digitally mapped projection installation, featuring prolific Australian artists and some special international cameos.

The gallery will be mapped and illuminate a site specific location by projection artist Nema Adel and curated by Create or Die. Adel’s unique immersive style will transform some of our favourite artists work into a surprising night of large scale interactive discovery.

Sailing Museum-Machine is a mobile museum that once might have been actively trading amongst the islands of Port Phillip and Corio Bay. Called Качанка (Kachanka) this interactive museum-machine (sailcaravan) visits Geelong After Dark bringing artefacts and communicating secrets of the sea from local bay area.
