This Guiding Light

  • Little Malop Central between Morrabool & Yarra Sts Little Malop St Geelong, VIC, 3220 Australia (map)

Artist: Janine ‘Neeni’ Durston

Working predominantly as an abstract expressionist artist I create pieces that take the viewer on a journey around a space with fluid lines that travel from canvas to canvas.

For Geelong After Dark and exploring the theme of ‘light’ I would create a similar viewer experience using Fluorescent (glow in the dark) paint on panels which would be displayed under black lights. So the viewer would literally be guided by the light emitted from the panels around the space.

Just as people are encouraged to explore the city of Geelong after dark they would be able to take an explorative journey from panel to panel.

Each panel would stand alone as an individual piece, yet work with the other panels to create a glowing trail to be followed. The paint would be applied to a dark background with only the fluid vertical flow of the fluorescent paint standing out under the black lights.

The title I would give to this series of works would be ‘this guiding light’ to further encourage the audience to be guided by the fluid path of light coming from the paint. this display would be 10 or so panels on wood or canvas, depending on the size of the allocated site and size of the display area.
